Welcome to the Dark Side!

What if your client's favorite character is a villain? This presentation will explore villains and "bad guys" and their usefulness in therapy sessions with clients. Using origin stories and a trauma focused lens, this presentation will look at popular villains and provide therapeutic interventions for participants to use with their clients.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will identify three ways to use villains and bag guys in therapy.
  2. Participants will engage in two activities utilizing villains and "bad guys.
  3. Participants will demonstrate the ability to use villain based interventions with their clients.

This course offers CEs for the NM Counseling and Therapy Practice Board. Check with your individual licensing boards to see whether these CEs may apply.

Maria Laquerre is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, who specializes in addressing trauma with clients of all ages. Maria is the owner and CEO of A New Hope Therapy center, a group practice in Las Cruces, NM. Maria earned her Bachelor of Science in Family and Child Science from New Mexico State University and her Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from University of New Hampshire.

Maria is a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor and an American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy approved supervisor. Maria's current passion is supporting therapists in doing their best clinical work, which she pursues through offering supervision, consultation and trainings. Always finding a way to make things geeky, Maria delights in finding fun ways to utilize pop culture and superheroes to destigmatize therapy and build connection with clients.

Maria enjoys spending time with her family, watching Star Wars and Marvel movies, discussing the psychology of pop culture and loves a good book!
